It has been shown that photovoltaic parks can increase rainfall in arid regions, according to a study carried out at a plant on the Arabian Red Sea coastal plain. Simulations point to the feasibility of recovering fresh water from sea breezes through the geoengineering of the land surface. Essentially, water lost through evaporation is recovered through the reflectivity of the land, making it possible to alter rainfall patterns. If this were the case, almost 8% of the total mass of water vapour in the Earth’s atmosphere would be recovered, or at least a large part of it.
Spain is positioning itself as a key country on the path towards European energy independence, but it faces a major challenge: work is needed on interconnections between the peninsula and the rest of the EU. The European Commission is expected to present a new photovoltaic strategy shortly to support the 20 GW target for 2025. By 2030, the EU plans to reach 100 GW of full solar value chain manufacturing
The United States could increase its photovoltaic energy capacity by 66% over the next decade. According to studies produced by consultancy Wood Mackenzie, because of the major challenges of 2021, large-scale solar capacity was delayed or cancelled, falling short of forecasts. Some of the challenges it faced, and continues to face, are:
- Ongoing constraints in the global supply chain and uncertainty about the future
- Constant rise in prices
- The challenge of interconnections
